Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

For The Dough
  • 2 ¼ tsp one packet active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm water around 110°F
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
For The Sauce
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes 15 oz
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
For Toppings
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Sliced pepperoni or any topping you love
  • Fresh basil optional but totally worth it

Method

  1. Pour warm water into a mixing bowl and sprinkle in the yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  2. Add the sugar, salt, olive oil, and flour. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 8 minutes until smooth.
  3. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. While the dough rises, combine crushed tomatoes, minced garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper in a bowl to make the sauce.
  5. Preheat oven to 500°F and place a pizza stone or baking sheet on the middle rack to heat for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on parchment paper into a 12-inch circle using a rolling pin or hands.
  7. Lightly spoon sauce onto the rolled dough, then sprinkle evenly with shredded mozzarella and add desired toppings.
  8. Slide the pizza (on parchment) onto the hot stone or baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 11 minutes until cheese bubbles and crust is golden.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Use fresh mozzarella for a richer taste, and sprinkle cornmeal under the dough for easy handling. Don’t overload with sauce or toppings to keep the crust crispy.
