Ingredients
Method
- Pour warm water into a mixing bowl and sprinkle in the yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- Add the sugar, salt, olive oil, and flour. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 8 minutes until smooth.
- Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- While the dough rises, combine crushed tomatoes, minced garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper in a bowl to make the sauce.
- Preheat oven to 500°F and place a pizza stone or baking sheet on the middle rack to heat for at least 30 minutes.
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on parchment paper into a 12-inch circle using a rolling pin or hands.
- Lightly spoon sauce onto the rolled dough, then sprinkle evenly with shredded mozzarella and add desired toppings.
- Slide the pizza (on parchment) onto the hot stone or baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 11 minutes until cheese bubbles and crust is golden.
- Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
Use fresh mozzarella for a richer taste, and sprinkle cornmeal under the dough for easy handling. Don’t overload with sauce or toppings to keep the crust crispy.
