Ingredients

Main
  • 4 slices of thick bread Brioche or challah give amazing results
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon butter for the pan
  • Powdered sugar and maple syrup for topping

Method

  1. Crack the eggs into a shallow dish. Add milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Whisk the mixture until smooth and creamy, about 1-2 minutes.
  2. Dip each slice of thick bread into the egg mixture for 10 to 15 seconds per side, ensuring both sides are coated but not soaked.
  3. Melt the butter in a nonstick pan over medium heat. Allow it to sizzle before adding the bread slices.
  4. Place the soaked bread slices into the pan. Cook each side for 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown. Flip only once to ensure crispness.
  5. Remove the cooked French toast from the pan and plate. Top with powdered sugar, maple syrup, and optional toppings like berries or banana slices.

Notes

For best results, use slightly stale bread for better absorption. Clean the pan between batches for consistent texture. Freeze leftovers with parchment between slices and reheat in a toaster or oven.
